Fit for Life
FITFORLIFE
While the Boys & Girls Clubs have always offered both recreational and sports activities to its members, FITFORLIFE is our attempt to become more intentional, comprehensive and innovative in our approach to fitness and health. In reconfiguring the infrastructure of our programs, FITFORLIFE was created to ensure all of our members - not just the athletes - get active each day and lead healthy lifestyles. Accordingly, all of our members are now required to participate in at least 45 minutes of FITFORLIFE activities each day. The primary goal of FITFORLIFE is to tackle the nationwide epidemic of childhood obesity through daily physical activity, healthy meals & snacks and nutrition education.
The tool we use to evaluate the progress of this program is the Fitnessgram Test. The Fitnessgram Test is a physical fitness assessment which was created by the Cooper Institute and is in partnership with NFL Play 60. Fitnessgram uses a variety of health-related indicators, including BMI (Body Mass Index) - which has presented the most pleasing results thus far. Of our members who have taken the test more than once, we found that a majority of the kids experienced an improvement in their overall BMI within only a five month time span. In an effort to capture as many youth as possible, we will continue to administer this test three times per year.
