At Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati, our programming is about much more than just keeping kids busy. We’re preparing our students for bright futures, which is why our investment in curriculum development is such a vital part of our mission. We’re working every day to give young people the tools they need to succeed, from career pathways to financial literacy and other essential life skills.

Building Soft Skills That Last a Lifetime

For our youngest students, learning begins with the simple but powerful lessons of kindness, respect and resilience. Using encouraging scripts like “Stick together” and “You can do hard things,” we help children begin building the foundation of soft skills they’ll use throughout their lives. For our teens, this intentional focus deepens into practical lessons around responsibility, accountability and leadership. The balance of structure and nurture, what we call “kindness with consistency,” creates a safe and supportive environment where youth can thrive.

Structure is Safety

When our programs are highly structured and thoughtfully planned, kids quickly learn the importance of preparation, reflection and follow-through. These skills are essential throughout life. Much like parenting, we know that structure combined with care provides the safest, most nurturing space for growth.

All of the programming delivered in our Clubs (by either staff or partners) adheres to the proven Youth Program Quality Improvement (YPQI) model, which ensures each program delivers its lesson in the most effective way. Beyond setting up each program for the best chance of success, this structure also provides consistency so that our students know what to expect at every program they attend.

Partnering for Possibility

While our staff are experts in youth development, they’re not experts in every field. And that’s where our partners come in. Thanks to generous contributions from our donors, we’re able to bring in leaders in science, design, finance and more to deliver real-world knowledge alongside our trained staff. Programs like Design Lab give students the chance to explore architecture and sustainability, while initiatives like Magnified Giving help kids connect with service and philanthropy. These partnerships mean our students are exposed to industries and ideas they might never have encountered otherwise.

Preparing Teens for What’s Next

Teen programming has always been one of the areas where we’ve wanted to grow, and now we are. Our new Workforce Development Center offers a dedicated space for teens with new spaces, technology and additional full-time staff providing one-on-one guidance for high school students. Here, high school students receive assistance as they consider careers, college and beyond, with trips to local universities, corporate offices and job sites, as well as sit-downs with professionals to discuss the details of their careers. We also integrate lessons on financial literacy into our programming so youth can make smart, informed choices about money and help set themselves up for long-term stability.

Developing a plan for life after high school is an essential step on the path to success. While we help teens with their own personal plan, we’re also equipping them with knowledge and confidence to follow their passions.

Investing in the People Who Make It Possible

The heart of our success has always been our staff. They bring the energy, care and creativity that make our Clubs feel like a second home rather than a second classroom. Through our capital campaign, we’re able to invest in higher wages, training like trauma-competent care and ongoing coaching to ensure our staff are supported as they support our kids. Because when we recruit and retain staff that are passionate about our mission, kids feel safe and empowered.

Looking Ahead

As our capital campaign continues, the future is bright for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati. With new spaces, new partnerships and expanded curriculum, we’re opening doors to opportunities that our kids might never have imagined. Most importantly, we’re showing them that they matter and that with the right support, they can achieve anything.
