By 9 a.m., Club members were beginning to trickle through the doors, greeted by familiar faces and a day full of opportunities ahead. Excitement was already building as the 5th and 6th grade room began lining up for a field trip to Jungle Jim's International Market. As conversations picked up and friends reunited, the day quickly got underway with a STEM challenge that had members thinking like engineers.
In preparation for Friday's egg drop, members worked together to brainstorm designs, test ideas and plan how they might protect an egg from a fall off the Buenger Club roof. The challenge sparked plenty of creativity, collaboration and problem-solving as members debated which materials and strategies would give their eggs the best chance of survival. One team of 2nd and 3rd graders, proudly calling themselves the "Wrap Group," was confident their ten-layer bubble wrap design would survive the drop.
After program time, members headed outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. Creativity quickly took center stage. Empress, a first grader, carefully constructed a "roly-poly habitat," explaining that she learned from zookeepers during a recent field trip that every enclosure needs enrichment items. Nearby, Adoria, Kyra and Elliot gathered flowers to create clover crowns, necklaces and bracelets.
Inside the Teen Center, members spent time in the Esports lab before turning their attention to a spirited game of Grammar Jeopardy. The competition was fierce, with teams eager to prove their knowledge and earn bragging rights.
Before lunch, members settled into "chill time," enjoying classic games like Operation, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Headbanz and Uno. Outside, teens took advantage of the Club's dedicated patio space— playing cards, chatting with friends and enjoying the summer weather in an area designed just for them.
Lunch offered a chance to recharge with chili cheese noodles, green beans, applesauce, and of course, chocolate milk. According to Erica and Empress, the meal earned a perfect 10 out of 10. Their reasoning? "Because we love chocolate milk." When Erica needed help opening her carton with a cast on her right arm, Empress was quick to lend a hand.
After lunch, members headed back into programs. A small group gathered for Power Hour, sharpening their multiplication skills and building confidence in math. In the K-1 classroom, young learners explored engineering concepts through magnetic building blocks, testing designs and constructing imaginative creations.
Meanwhile, teens spent part of the afternoon in the Esports lab, challenging one another in popular games like NBA 2K, Fortnite, Mario Party and Rocket League. Spaces like these reflect the Club's commitment to meeting teens where they are, creating environments and experiences that keep older youth engaged, connected and coming back. Also on display was a service-learning project completed the day before— care packages assembled for clients of the Brighton Center. In some were notes like, “I’m sorry you have been going through so much, God Bless.”
Summer at the Club is about much more than staying busy. It's about discovering new interests, building friendships, developing skills and creating memories along the way.
For many of the young people we serve, opportunities like these are not always readily available outside of the Club. Access to enriching activities, safe places to play, hands-on learning experiences, field trips and positive adult mentors can be limited during the summer months. At the Club, youth have a place where they can continue learning, explore their interests and simply enjoy being kids.
While no two days at the Club are exactly alike, this snapshot reflects what happens across Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati every day. From academic support and STEM activities to recreation, creative expression and meaningful relationships, each experience is intentionally designed to help young people learn, grow and belong.
More than just a place to go, the Club is a place to be. A place to create, explore, connect and discover what's possible.
